Geotechnical Software

Software is designed to make work easier, and is a great tool for presenting laboratory results or using output to bulk up that geotechnical report. However, the use of computer programs for engineering practice should be done carefully. Your work should be hand-checked to the corresponding software generated results until confident with the output of a particular scenario. Geotechnical Info.com is not a big fan of software. It frequently gets abused by engineers, young and experienced, who cannot identify reasonable results. Other than information pertaining to free and proprietary software found here, writing your own program on a spreadsheet can be just as effective. This is especially useful when minimizing construction costs because you can input a set of different parameters and easily compare the results on the same screen. Plus, when writing a program yourself, you get a deeper understanding and feeling of the parameters involved, and learn that specific analysis methods are more suited to specific situations.

On this website, there are references to several different software and their corresponding geotechnical functions. You can further research these - some may be available for free, some may not. Limited discussions are provided for the effectiveness some software.

For free software availability, you may be able to find them at a University that has a civil engineering curriculum.
